Internet and phone service providers have been battling to see who can provide the best service. Nonetheless, that is left up to our personal opinion depending on how we use that individual service.

Here's what I mean, no matter where you are working from, your internet upload or download time will affect your personal opinion of the service you are utilizing. Recently, a company known as Vexus Fiber declared Abilene Texas to be a "Certified Gigabit City." Meaning that their internet service is a total fiber-optic service, and claims to be faster.

While Abilene was declared as a "Certified Gigabit City"  that doesn't exactly mean that the entire city of Abilene has high-speed capabilities. However, according to Erika Mastropierro Vexus' media relations representative, she said: "For Abilene to be designated as a Gigabit City, over 50% of Abilene, Texas has to be covered with high-speed fiber optic internet service and it is."

What makes this announcement so exciting is that Abilene joins only a handful of other cities in Texas that are certified as "Gigabit Cities." What is most surprising is that cities like El Paso, Lubbock, San Angelo, Midland Odessa, and Wichita Falls are not Gigabit Cities.

Gigabit cities are cities that have a pure fibre network with unlimited bandwidth and gigabit speed. This can revolutionize how we live and work, and is a huge asset to the public sector, private business, and the general public.

What does Gigabit City mean to you and me who work from time to time when internet service can be questionable at times? Erica says, "With the ability of fiber optics if you have a TRUE 500 Meg service your upload and download speeds will be 500 Megs." With the conventional old services that are available to Abilene 500 Meg, download speeds are possible however upload speeds are only at 50 megs.

According to Ms. Mastropiero, she says "the internet speeds in Abilene can reach up to 5 gigs both up or down." Abilene City Manager Robert Hanna said “Cultivating a certified Gigabit City isn’t just about internet speeds; it’s about fostering innovation, empowering businesses, and enriching lives through seamless connectivity,”

City Manager Hanna went on to say “It’s a testament to Abilene’s commitment to progress and our dedication to providing our Abilene citizens with the tools they need to thrive in this digital age we are living in now.”
