Let’s say it out loud…because people in Texas are already saying it anyway. Every time something shuts down in Abilene, there’s always that one comment: “Welp…guess Hendrick’s moving in next.”

It’s a joke…until it doesn’t feel like one anymore.

I was cruising through the old Facebook feeds when I saw that Chuck E. Cheese was closing down in the Mall of Abilene. Naturally, there were jokes to suggest a new Hendrick's would soon take over the space, or the mall, completely, for that matter.

Is Hendrick Health A Monopoly?

Over the past few years, Hendrick Health has expanded in a big way, including acquiring Abilene Regional Medical Center. That move made them the dominant provider for acute care in the area.

And naturally, that’s raising some eyebrows in Abilene, Texas.

How This Was Allowed Under Texas Law

This didn’t just happen overnight, and it didn’t happen illegally.

In 2019, Texas passed House Bill 3301, allowing nonprofit hospitals to merge under something called a Certificate of Public Advantage (COPA). Instead of going through traditional federal antitrust scrutiny, hospitals can get approval from the state if they prove the merger benefits the community.

According to reporting from Texas Standard, this law was designed to help hospitals in smaller and rural markets stay open and improve coordination of care.

Why More Abilene Residents Are Starting to Ask Questions

Hendrick Health received that approval in 2020, allowing it to acquire Abilene Regional Medical Center under state oversight. The Concerns: Less Competition, Higher Costs?

The Federal Trade Commission actually pushed back on the merger, warning it could lead to higher healthcare costs, reduced competition, and fewer choices for patients.

The Big Debate in Abilene Right Now

Because healthcare is already expensive. When options shrink, it doesn’t exactly give patients leverage, and that’s where a lot of local concern comes from.

Some residents have also raised questions about insurance limitations, network restrictions, and whether fewer providers could impact overall service quality over time.

Both things can be true depending on how it plays out.

So…What Happens Next?

That’s the million-dollar question. Hendrick Health continues to grow, and for now, it remains the primary healthcare system serving Abilene and much of the Big Country.

But as more people start asking questions, it’s clear this is something folks are paying attention to. Because when it comes to healthcare, having options isn’t just nice…it matters in Texas.
