Glassjaw Unleash Burly Yet Cinematic New Song ‘Shira’

Subscribe to Rock 108 on

Nearly two years after releasing their comeback song “New White Extremity,” post-hardcore heavyweights Glassjaw have returned with “Shira,” a burly yet shimmering new track off their long-awaited new album, Material Control, which will be their first full length offering since 2002’s Worship and Tribute.

It’s like Glassjaw have been frozen in time, applying the same dynamics to their sound as they did on their first pair of albums. “Shira” boasts a thick, rolling bass groove that anchors the song and drives its heaviest aspects. Dissonance swirls around rigid guitar chugging, creating a combative atmosphere that’s quelled, in part, by Daryl Palumbo’s cinematic, airy vocals. The opposing facets of Glassjaw’s style align over the lush chorus with a fluid bass line presenting a gentler touch than in other areas of “Shira.”

Last week, Glassjaw distributed flexi discs of each supposed Material Control track to select outlets, as seen in the Loudwire Instagram post below. The band had also been issuing teaser clips for the album, which is expected to arrive on Dec. 1.

Just got sent this from @glassjaw. Wonder what this could mean…

You can catch Glassjaw on the road as they wind down their trek in support of The Used. The run will come to a close on Nov. 29 in Seattle, Wash. and a list of all remaining stops can be seen at this location. They’ll kick off the new year with four Australian dates in January and keep an eye out for more on the band’s Facebook page.
