This Texas Park Lets You Walk in Real Dinosaur Footprints (And It’s Not Far From Abilene)
After my recent trip to Woody’s Classic Cars & Baseball Museum in Cross Plains, it got me thinking about some of those places around Texas that just stick with you from childhood. You know the ones. The places that make you feel like a kid again the second you pull into the parking lot.
For me, one of those places is Dinosaur Valley State Park near Glen Rose.
And if you’ve never been… you’re seriously missing out.

Walk Where Dinosaurs Actually Walked
The big draw here is something you simply can’t get just anywhere. Real dinosaur tracks.
Not replicas. Not a museum display. Actual footprints from dinosaurs that walked through the area more than 100 million years ago, preserved right in the bed of the Paluxy River.
When the water level is low, you can literally walk out into the river and stand in the same footprints left by massive prehistoric creatures. It’s one of the wildest “only in Texas” experiences you’ll ever have.
Trails, Swimming Holes, and Pure Texas Outdoors
Beyond the dinosaur tracks, the park is packed with ways to spend an entire day outside. There are more than 20 miles of trails for hiking and exploring, plus areas where you can mountain bike, fish, kayak, or just kick back and enjoy nature.
And if you grew up in Texas, you’ll love this part: the Paluxy River swimming holes. Spots like the famous Blue Hole are perfect for cooling off when that Texas heat starts cranking up.
A Perfect Texas Spring Break or Summer Getaway
Whether you’re looking for a quick day trip, a spring break adventure with the kids, or a full weekend escape, this place delivers. You can camp, picnic, explore trails, and let the kids run wild, discovering dinosaur tracks all day long.
Dinosaur Valley State Park is cooler than the other side of the pillow… and it’s one of those Texas spots everyone should experience at least once.
And if you’ve never been, trust me, it’s time to change that.
