Abilene Population Hits New High in 2025 as Massive Data Centers Move In
If you live in Abilene, Texas, you don’t need a spreadsheet to know something’s up. Traffic’s a little thicker, neighborhoods keep popping up where there used to be dirt, and every few months someone says, “Wait… when did that get built?” (Lookin’ at you Dollar General)
As of 2025, Abilene’s population is estimated at about 131,500 people, up from 125,182 in the 2020 census. That’s real growth, not “blink and you’ll miss it” growth.

Abilene Population Growth Over the Last Decade
Back in 2015, we were sitting at around 121,000 residents. Fast-forward ten years and we’ve added roughly 10,000 people, which comes out to about 9% growth. Not bad for a city that still argues about the best chicken-fried steak and how many potholes are on the streets of Abilene.

Recent data shows Abilene growing at about 0.6% to 1% per year, which is slow, steady, and honestly kind of our style.
Why More People Are Calling Abilene Home
Even though Abilene gets a lot of flak for some things, people are still moving here for a variety of reasons:
- Lower cost of living
- Short commutes
- Good schools
- A community where folks still wave at each other in parking lots.
Also… you can buy a house here without selling a kidney.
Those things have quietly kept Abilene moving forward while other cities turned into expensive chaos.
The Data Centers Are the New Wild Card
Here’s where things get spicy.
Abilene is now home to major AI and cloud data center projects, including massive developments from Crusoe, Lancium, and Stargate. One of the campuses alone is part of a 1.2-gigawatt expansion tied to AI infrastructure.
No, data centers won’t turn Abilene into Dallas overnight. But they do bring investment, construction jobs, tech workers, and more businesses that follow the money.
We're Not DFW....Yet
So yeah… Abilene’s not exploding, but it’s leveling up. And, I dig that.
We’ve grown steadily for a decade, and now with big tech money planting roots here, the next ten years could be even more interesting to watch. More jobs, more development, more reasons people stick around instead of heading out.
