Abilene Bighorns Bring Semi-Pro Football Back to West Texas
Football is supreme in Texas. So the fact that Abilene is getting another semi-pro football team is leaving folks as excited as when a new restaurant is launched in the Key City. The Abilene Bighorns are coming to town!
The team comes with renewed energy, community focus, and a Christian mission at their core. A recent Facebook post proudly proclaims:
The Abilene Bighorns are more than football — we’re building leaders, mentoring youth, and serving our community through faith, discipline, and heart.
A History of Semi‑Pro Football in Abilene
Abilene has a deep love for hard-hitting football, with semi-pro teams playing a big role in that legacy. From 2009 to 2013, the city was home to the Abilene Ruff Riders, later rebranded as the Bombers, who brought fast-paced indoor action to the Taylor County Expo Center and built a loyal following.

But the passion goes beyond arena ball. For nearly a century, Shotwell Stadium has hosted everything from high school rivalries to semi-pro matchups, cementing Abilene’s place as a true football town. The return of the Bighorns taps into that rich tradition.
Abilene Bighorns Announce Familiar Voice
My buddy Johnny Johnson, who you might remember as Dave Andrews on the radio, and who is the owner of Big Johnson Liquor & Beer, will be the voice of the new team. Johnny brings decades of experience in announcing to the Bighorns. His legendary voice has been heard as the voice of the Abilene Aviators hockey team, the Abilene Prairie Dogs baseball team, and the Abilene Ruff Riders, among others.
Some might even remember the time Johnny got kicked out of a Prairie Dogs game he was announcing for ruffling the ref's feathers. It will be good to hear his voice booming on the mic once again.
What’s Next for the Bighorns
- Roster reveal & schedule: Fans are awaiting news of player sign‑ups and exhibition games, especially exciting with college athletes aiming for the next level.
- Home field announcement: No official word yet, but Shotwell Stadium could be on the table given its historic capacity and local significance
- Community outreach: Given their mission, expect youth camps, church partnerships, and charity appearances.
A New Chapter Begins For Abilene Football
The Bighorns aren’t just another team hitting the field; it’s a full-on revival of Abilene’s semi-pro football spirit. With deep community roots, a faith-driven mission, and a familiar voice like Johnny Johnson back on the mic, this season’s shaping up to be something special, on the field and off.
