‘Weeds’ Season 8 Confirmed To Be the Show’s Last

Weeds Season 8 Final
Showtime

Looks like the ‘Weeds’ bag is empty, folks.  Shut off your growth lights, pack up your bongs, and sift through the haze for more marijuana metaphors, because Showtime has decided to pass on any additional seasons of long-running Mary-Louise Parker comedy ‘Weeds.’

After seven years and an upcoming eighth season, ‘Weeds’ will call it quits, according to the latest report from Entertainment Weekly.  The decision was handed down by Showtime boss David Nevins, who stressed the value of knowing when to end its flagship shows on the right note.  ‘Weeds’ and ‘Dexter‘ were the original pioneers of edgy drama for Showtime, paving the way for its rich current crop.  Says Nevins:

How they get brought home is really important. In this case, both for the sake of the two women behind the show [Series creator Jenji Kohan and Mary-Louise Parker] and an audience that’s really invested in the show. TV fans love nothing better to complain about how shows end and we really want to end this one the right way.

Kohan herself also spoke on the series’ end, saying “I’m so proud of what we do here and that it’s about a strong woman lead who’s really flawed…we get to do comedy right up against drama, which a lot of shows don’t get the opportunity to do.”

‘Weeds’ eighth and final season will premiere on Showtime July 1, presumably resolving the assassination cliffhanger that left off season 7 and moving a bit forward in the show’s narrative.  Though an ending has yet to be written for the series, it’s unlikely that the show will end on one of its trademark cliffhangers.  “We wrack our brains every year for crazy cliffhangers and we’re trying to figure out how to top ourselves,” says Kohan.

What say you?  Are you sad to see ‘Weeds’ conclude its eight-year run, or was there further room for cough, growth?  Pass on your take, or your best ‘Weeds’ jokes in the comments below!
