Seth Rogen, who stays about half as busy as The Rock (which is still, like, 20 times busier than you’ll ever be), is stepping behind the news desk for his next gig. In what could be a surprising dramatic turn for Rogen the actor, he’s signed on to play the late Walter Cronkite for director David Gordon Green’s Newsflash — which chronicles the evening news host’s coverage of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963.

Seth Rogen Has His Eye on ‘Sausage Party 2’, More R-Rated Animated Movies
With Sausage Party setting an August box office record this past weekend, that sound you hear is doors across Hollywood opening for R-rated animated movies. This is probably an overdue development. Movies from studios like Pixar and Studio Ghibli have long been praised by people of all ages for the maturity of their themes; it was only a matter of time until someone with a proven track record and a bit of vision  —  a filthy, filthy vision  —  pushed animated movies right off into the deep end.

AMC’s Preacher has been in development long enough that executive producer Seth Rogen once sought to audition for Arseface in a different production, and everything appears to have come full circle. Not only did Rogen make his own Preacher, the Neighbors 2 star made his own Preacher of his own Preacher, recreating the trailer with himself starring in every role.

Sausage Party is the first ever R-rated CG-animated film. Based on a concept Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill and Evan Goldberg first came up with 8 years ago, the film, by definition, is something you have never seen before. It’s raunchy, rowdy and completely insane. Unfortunately, it’s just not very funny.

Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s Preacher is one of those tricky properties to properly adapt. Remain too faithful and you run the risk of creating a laughably absurd, tonally catastrophic mess. Venture too far away from the source material and you may alienate the very fan base you wish to please. Thankfully, producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg and showrunner Sam Catlin have hit that rare sweet spot, and though the pilot episode of AMC’s Preacher does recalibrate some of Ennis and Dillon’s basic plotting and setups, the essential spirit and characters of the graphic novel remain delightfully the same.

Studios have been trying to replicate the success of Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s The LEGO Movie, with films based on Play-Doh, Minecraft, Playmobil and more in the works. And while we’ve yet to see exactly how these attempts will pan out, we can add another one to the pile as Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg have signed on to produce a movie based on the Where’s Waldo? series of books.

Now Rogen has decided if he’s going to be at SXSW anyway, he might as well bring one of his upcoming films with him. The actor-director will premiere a “work in progress” print of his first animated film, Sausage Party, with a cast that includes Kristen Wiig, Jonah Hill, Paul Rudd and more.
