Ever since a November 2008 car accident, Deftones bassist Chi Cheng has mostly been in a coma. In the meantime, the band has continued to write and tour with replacement bassist Sergio Vega. Last night, though, Deftones came closer to having Chi back than they've been in nearly four years, as the band invited Chi's son Gabe onstage to perform with them in San Francisco.
Deftones are inching closer to a new album, and have now revealed the artwork for their 'Koi No Yokan' collection (posted to the left). The visually intriguing cover, which they debuted at their website and Facebook pages, appears to be mirrored sections of a dark room, with only a dulled green entryway and glowing orange floor lights reflecting back.
In a new interview, Deftones frontman Chino Moreno speaks about the writing process for the band’s upcoming album ‘Koi No Yokan’ compared to various other releases and how he deals with the ailing state of his friend and bass player Chi Cheng.
Deftones have put in the work, and now they’re going to have a little fun on top of it by recording a few cover songs. Singer Chino Moreno, interviewed by Minnesota radio station 93X prior to Knotfest, revealed that the group’s forthcoming album has been recorded and they’re now making plans for the covers.

Hot on the heels of premiering the new song ‘Rosemary,’ Deftones shared another new jam called ‘Roller Derby.’ The ‘Tones performed both ‘Rosemary’ and ‘Roller Derby’ last night (July 28) at another gig at the Troubadour in Hollywood. Our hearts go out to Deftones bassist Chi Cheng and his family, as yet another bout of pneumonia is keeping the musician in the hospital. Back in June, Cheng, who has been in a three-plus-year coma, was supposed to be sent home after battling pneumonia but now remains hospitalized with another bout with the illness.
The Deftones are closing in on a new record, and as the group ages, singer Chino Moreno says there are better and more collaborative relationships building within the band.
There’s good news to report concerning Deftones bassist Chi Cheng, who appears to be improving after being admitted to the ICU late last week for pneumonia.
