Is ‘Star Trek 2′ the Last Adventure For Spock?

Star Trek Spock

Star Trek Into Darkness‘ doesn’t hit theaters for another six months but one of the film’s actors is already talking about the end. Zachary Quinto, who stars as Spock in the J.J. Abrams reboot-verse, said he might be done with the character and the ‘Star Trek’ universe.

[The following article contains spoilers for 'American Horror Story: Asylum.']

Quinto spoke with Entertainment Weekly, ostensibly to talk about ‘American Horror Story: Asylum’ but towards the end of the interview got talking to ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ and fans may be left disappointed. The actor seems to indicate he’s ready to move into a new era with his career and that may mean leaving ‘Star Trek’ and Spock behind.

It’s like an era of association with certain roles – a specific part like Spock, or a kind of part, like Sylar — is coming to an end…

If it’s weird that Quinto brought up his role as Sylar on the long-since-canceled NBC series ‘Heroes’ it’s because of a connection to his character on ‘American Horror Story.’ He elaborates: “I think it’s safe to say this will be the last serial killer I’ll be playing for the foreseeable future.”

OK, so he’s got bad guy fatigue – we can certainly understand that. But what does this have to do with ‘Star Trek’ and Spock? Maybe Quinto is getting frustrated with these types of roles and wants to do something more artistic. But who says you can’t have your cake and eat it too? Just ask James Franco who can star in ‘Oz, the Great and Powerful’ and then go and direct a music video for R.E.M. with Lindsay Lohan.

We hope that Quinto was just feeling frustrated that day or perhaps misquoted and that ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’ really won’t signal the end of Spock. What do you think?
