Smashing Pumpkins Announce Massive ‘Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness’ Reissue

Smashing Pumpkins
EMI

The Smashing Pumpkins‘ 1995 double album, ‘Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness,’ is getting a major upgrade in December with multiple physical and digital configurations.

The most expansive release is a five-CD/one-DVD deluxe collection that arrives Dec. 3 in North America and Dec. 4 internationally. Fans can also pick up the set in vinyl and digital formats. Included in the deluxe box set is 64 tracks of previously unreleased material or alternate versions of the album’s songs. The DVD, meanwhile, features a full live show filmed at London’s Brixton Academy, and a German music television performance on Rockpalast.

The entire deluxe box set comes house in a 12×12 lift-top box with magnetic closure, reimagined cover art and a velvet-lined disc holder. Also included are two books containing personal notes, lyrics, new collage artwork, and a Decoupage kit, where fans can create their own scenes from the ‘Mellon Collie’ universe.

Singer Billy Corgan says in the liner notes, “What strikes me now about ‘Melon Collie’ is that we were coming off of making ‘Siamese Dream’ with Butch Vig – which was a very idealized statement. ‘Siamese Dream was very successful and very much at the forefront of how records are made now with a strong perfectionist streak. Yet coming off of that success, we went completely in the opposite direction working with Flood and Alan Moulder. We headed into a much darker, funkier, and more visceral terrain. Revisiting ‘Mellon Collie’ for this edition, that’s what struck me – that we made this kind of dramatic ‘about face’ at a time when most people would have made an even more expensive idealized statement. We went deep, and we went for something expansive sounding – not just expansive sounding.”

The double-album, initially released in 1995, has earned diamond certification for sales of 10 million discs. It featured such hits as ‘Bullet With Butterfly Wings,’ ’1979,’ ‘Tonight Tonight, and ‘Zero.’ The band would win a Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance for ‘Bullet With Butterfly Wings.’
