Nirvana’s ‘Heart-Shaped Box’ Performed on NBC’s ‘The Voice’ by Lindsey Pavao and Lee Koch

Lindsay Pavao / Lee Koch

NBC’s singing competition ‘The Voice’ took an interesting turn when two contestants performed Nirvana‘s ‘In Utero’ classic ‘Heart-Shaped Box’ in a head-to-head elimination battle on the show.

Coach Christina Aguilera chose the song for her team members Lindsey Pavao, a coffee shop singer, and Lee Koch, a full-time baker. While Pavao expressed her love for Nirvana and ‘Heart-Shaped Box,’ Koch admitted he hadn’t heard the song in a while and wasn’t as familiar with the tune.

Koch looked seemed totally lost during the rehearsals, with guest mentor Jewel telling him he had a lot of work to do. Pavao, meanwhile, was aided by guest mentor Lionel Richie.

It’s weird enough seeing a Nirvana song performed on a TV singing competition, but having Jewel and Lionel Richie provide advice on singing ‘Heart-Shaped Box’ is even more peculiar.

It was all very odd, as was the performance itself. Koch started it off and seemed a bit tight and out of his element. Pavao seemed more confident with the song, and her ethereal voice paired nicely with the late Kurt Cobain‘s haunting lyrics.

Celebrity coach Adam Levine of Maroon 5 called the performance ‘delightfully creepy,’ but it was Christina Aguilera’s decision that counted. In the end, Aguilera chose Pavao, who moves on to the next round while Koch goes home.
