The Mars Volta Break Up

Texas prog heavies the Mars Volta have broken up. News of their demise came last night (Jan. 23) via a series of tweets from singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala, who founded the group in 2001 with multi-instrumentalist and producer Omar Rodríguez-López, his former compatriot in post-hardcore faves At the Drive-In.

“I can’t sit here and pretend any more. I no longer am a member of Mars Volta,” Bixler-Zavala tweeted, citing his longtime collaborator’s unwillingness to tour behind Volta’s sixth studio album, ‘Noctourniquet,’ as a major source of contention.

“For the record I tried my hardest to get a full scale North American tour going for Noctourniquet but Omar did not want to,” he wrote in another tweet. “I guess a break from mars volta means starting another band and ignoring all the support the fans gave us. I tried my hardest guys…”

Bixler-Zavala’s mention of “another band” was in reference to Rodríguez-López’s side project Bosnian Rainbows, which came together last year, during a Mars Volta hiatus.

“All I can do is move forward with my music and just be happy that mars volta ever happened at all. God Damn we had a blast. Thank u again!” Bixler-Zavala tweeted toward the end of his rant, thanking fans for years of support and promising a solo record that “sounds nothing like” his previous endeavors.”
