Mad Season’s Barrett Martin Reminisces About Late Frontman Layne Staley
Mad Season‘s tenure was short, but it’s no less of a fond memory for drummer Barrett Martin. The musician, who was probably better known for his work behind the kit with Screaming Trees back in their ’90s heyday, offers up a few remembrances of his late Mad Season bandmate Layne Staley in a new video posted at Diffuser.fm.
In the clip, Martin recalls being tight with Staley long before Mad Season ever came to fruition, as both Screaming Trees and Alice in Chains toured together at the tipping both for each acts successes. The drummer says that even with the newfound fame, Staley remained a man of the people. He recalled how even though there was a high demand for tickets to the show, Staley would frequently use his guest list allotment by heading outside of the venue and finding kids that couldn’t afford a ticket and putting them on the list rather than some industry pal or big wig.
Sadly both Staley and bassist John Baker Saunders passed away before Mad Season could complete their sophomore set. But luckily Martin and Pearl Jam‘s Mike McCready recently finished their long left stagnant work with the help of Screaming Trees’ Mark Lanegan filling in on vocals for Staley.
That work will now turn up as part of Mad Season’s ‘Above‘ deluxe reissue. The set also comes with the band’s original album and a DVD of the band’s final appearance with both Staley and Saunders still in the group. The ‘Above’ collection will be released April 2 through Sony Legacy.
