Joey Jordison Says He’s Constantly Writing for Slipknot and Shares a Favorite Paul Gray Memory

Joey Jordison
Mary Ouellette,

Slipknot drummer Joey Jordison and his latest musical endeavor Scar the Martyr are preparing for the release of their debut self-titled disc on Oct. 1, and as if that wasn’t enough, Jordison recently shared that he’s constantly working on new material for Slipknot too.

Although Scar the Martyr is his current focus, in a recent interview with ArtistDirect Jordison explained that writing new music for Slipknot is an integral part of his livelihood. “Whenever I pick up a guitar and I’m not doing anything, I’m always writing riffs,” said Jordison. And it’s not just Jordison, it’s a full group effort. “That’s all we’re doing. We’ve all got a sh– load of riffs,” he said.

Expanding on that thought, Jordison shared, “Even though we haven’t gotten together, there’s plenty of material there. We talk to each other all the time on our cell phones and all of that when we’re on tour in different spots of the world. We’re all working.”

For fans hoping for a more finalized timeline for new Slipknot material, Jordison didn’t get into specifics but did say something that should make fans happy. “We’re always writing,” he said. “We’re going to have so much sh– it might have to be a double record.”

During the interview, Jordison also talked about late Slipknot bassist Paul Gray and his favorite memory of Gray from the making of their album ‘Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verse.’ At first it was hard for Jordison to pick just one memory, but then he remembered one instance where he stayed up late one night with Gray to listen to the rough tracks of the record and collectively feeling like it was their best work to date. “We were sitting in his room playing guitar until late at night. It was one of those nights where we just connected about music and were reflecting on all the songs,” remembered Jordison. “If you see those pictures that Shawn took on the inside of the record sleeve, one of those was the doorway to Paul’s room. That’s where we hung a lot and connected on music and tracks we were doing at the time. It was a special time when we made that record in the Houdini Mansion.”

Fans can check out Jordison and Scar the Martyr out on tour throughout the beginning of November, check out all the dates here.
