Jhonny Peralta Missed Spring Training Game Because of Soup

Major leaguers haven’t exactly established themselves as iron men this spring. They have injured themselves in the following ways: shoveling snow, scaring their kids, wrestling with their dog and throwing out their gum.
On Monday, Detroit Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta missed a game because of an allergic reaction he had to soup â clam chowder, to be exact.
Leyland on Peralta: “He ate some clam chowder and he’s allergic to it. He didn’t realize it was clam chowder until he ate it.”

Hearing cantankerous Detroit manager Jim Leyland explain to a Tigers’ beat reporter that his starting shortstop is missing a game because of soup, without his head exploding, indicates that managers may be getting used to these “injuries.”
Maybe it’s all a part of learning how to deal with today’s players, many of whom are very selfish. That may not apply to Peralta, who is decidedly un-shellfish. (We’re here all week, folks; try the veal.)
