Just over one month ago, Gerard Way said he “wouldn’t count out” a My Chemical Romance reunion, but cautioned fans not to wait with bated breath as “everyone’s doing stuff” at the moment, carrying on with their lives outside of the band. Evidently, some of that “stuff” includes the singer landing his very own Netflix series based off his award-winning comic book The Umbrella Academy.

The 10-episode series is expected to arrive in 2018 as a live action adaptation of the comic. The narrative explores a group of dysfunctional outcasts of a superhero family who work together in an attempt to solve their father’s mysterious death. Personality clashes and their varying superhero abilities often find the cast at odds as they struggle to collaborate to achieve the common goal.

“I am thrilled that The Umbrella Academy has found a home at Netflix. I couldn’t think of a better place for the vision Gabriel Bá and myself had when creating the comic and cannot wait for people to experience that world as a live action show,” commented Way, who will also act as co-executive producer on the series.

Cindy Holland, Vice President of Original Content for Netflix explained how the partnership came to be. “What drew us to The Umbrella Academy is that it’s wholly unique, visual and stylized. These aren’t the usual superheroes and this series will embrace the singular tone of the graphic novels — dark yet humorous, supernatural yet grounded in reality. We’re excited to see this world and introduce these unforgettable heroes to Netflix members around the globe,” she detailed.

The first issue of The Umbrella Academy comic was released in 2007 with the story playing out across the pages of 15 issues in total (12 including three short stories). The story is set in 1977 (the year of Way’s birth) and embraces alternate history in a world when John F. Kennedy was never assassinated.
