Behold, the Pulp Masterpiece That Is the Final ‘King Arthur: Legend of the Sword’ Trailer

Popular culture travels in waves. A decade or so ago, when every studio was trying to copy The Matrix and start their own action franchises dripping with portentous myth-making and slow-motion fights, I would’ve killed for a summer movie that took a grounded approach to heroes and villains. Now, after several years of Marvel movies and grimdark blockbusters, the pendulum has swung back the other way. It’s not that Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword looks like a good movie, per se. It’s just that I’m in a place where I can really, really appreciate its goofiness.

This final trailer for King Arthur (via ComingSoon.net) doesn’t show us anything we haven’t seen a few times already, but it does suggest that the movie is going to be even more over-the-top than I’d already suspected. Giant war elephants? Charlie Hunnam sword fights that incorporate area-of-effect attacks ripped directly from your favorite video game? Jude Law babbling on about the “intoxication” of being feared by people? Plenty of moviegoers will probably roll their eyes at this nonsense, and I don’t think they’re wrong to do so, but if there’s even one chance in a hundred that King Arthur: Legend of the Sword is a pulp summer masterpiece, I’ll be in the front of the line.

Here’s the full plot synopsis for King Arthur: Legend of the Sword:

When the child Arthur’s father is murdered, Vortigern, Arthur’s uncle, seizes the crown. Robbed of his birthright and with no idea who he truly is, Arthur comes up the hard way in the back alleys of the city. But once he pulls the sword from the stone, his life is turned upside down and he is forced to acknowledge his true legacy…whether he likes it or not.

In addition to Charlie Hunnam and Jude Law, King Arthur will star Annabelle Wallis, Aiden Gillen, Eric Bana, Djimon Hounsou, and Michael McElhatton. The film will slice its way into theaters on May 12, 2017.
