Dead Rising 3′s ‘Hand-Crafted’ World Only Possible on Xbox One
Xbox One exclusive Dead Rising 3 will take advantage of the more powerful console architecture to bring more variety to the zombies and buildings in the world.
In an interview with CVG, Capcom producer Mike Jones discussed how many more custom assets could be used in Dead Rising 3 thanks to the power of the next-gen console. “You’re looking at more custom work and less reuse,” Jones said. “We’re not using the same textures over and over again, nor are we using the same geometry over and again. Every building and every interior in Dead Rising 3 is hand made and hand crafted. You’ll never see the same building twice.”
Additionally, zombies in Dead Rising 3 will be procedurally generated, meaning there will be a lot more variation in the looks of the hundreds of zombies you’ll encounter. “It’s all procedurally generated: hair styles, clothing, colours, textures. And the gore is too: missing jaws, missing eyes,” Jones said. “It’s all totally dynamic. That’s a whole system that we built. We didn’t just model the zombies, we had to model the pieces and the system puts them together.”
None of these features would have been possible on the Xbox 360 though, as Capcom had originally developed Dead Rising 3 for current systems, but found they weren’t powerful enough. “We dropped [Microsoft] an early prototype showing what we wanted to do that wasn’t going to happen on current-gen,” Jones added. “So they started giving us some guidance on what to do, these are some memory limitation to work with etc. Ultimately we made a prototype for them and they said ‘we need to put this on Xbox One.’”
Dead Rising 3 will launch exclusively on the Xbox One on Nov. 22.
