With the news of George Lucas' decision to give Disney control of the 'Star Wars' franchise for a news series of movies, there was hope that with Disney getting the rights it might lead to a new box set of the original films, perhaps in their original cuts. That's not going to happen, at least not any time soon.
Today's news that George Lucas is selling Lucasfilm and 'Star Wars' to Disney is so crazy that it's hard to believe it's true. Which may be why Lucas made a video to talk about the handover.
Last week, it was announced that Mathew Vaughn had abruptly left the the pre-production process on his 'X-Men: First Class' sequel 'X-Men: Days of Future Past.' Five days later, it's got a new director who's an old hand at these: Bryan Singer.
George Lucas has been the master of 'Star Wars' since its inception and though spin-off cartoons and games have been the norm for years, the film series seemed done with after six movies. Disney has just purchased Lucasfilm for over four billion dollars, and have just announced that they're planning on a new movie for sometime in 2015.
One this year's big holiday films is 'Rise of the Guardians,' which pits Santa Claus (voiced by Alec Baldwin), the Easter Bunny (Hugh Jackman), the Tooth Fairy (Isla Fisher) and the Sandman against the slightly satanic Pitch (Jude Law), with Jack Frost (Chris Pine) the newest recruit to the good guy gang of fantasy figures. Now there's a new featurette that lets you get to know Jack Frost.
Michael Bay played footsies for a while with doing more 'Transformers' movies, but has signed up for a fourth film, because... well, money. Lots and lots of it. Bay earned $80 Million from the first film (which is the lowest grossing film of the franchise), and gets 8% of the merchandising money, so it's safe to assume that he makes over $100 Million a sequel. But it looks like he's bringing in a new lead.
The 'Iron Man 3' trailer. It's finally here, after a number of trailer teasers. And you get a good look and listen to Ben Kingsley's Mandarin, a taste of Guy Pearce's role in the film, and the sense that this is a film of scale, and that nothing is going to come easy for Robert Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark.
One of the biggest critical darlings of 2012 has to be Leos Carax's 'Holy Motors,' which is just now hitting America starting with a two screen run in New York. It's slowly going to be coming across the country, and now there's an official trailer for the U.S. And it looks bonkers.
'The Man with the Iron Fists' has been pummeling us with character-based teasers, and today we get two more. One for Russell Crowe's character Jack Knife, and one for David Bautista's character Brass Body. Watching both promos in quick succession will get co-writer/director/star RZA's music stuck in your head.
We're excited about 'Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall,' but it seems the production has been kind of leaky. There's a cameo that's been spoiled (we won't spoil it), and there's obviously been youtube footage of the film's shooting (see image and link above). Perhaps they're trying to stem the tide by released the film's synopsis.
RZA's directorial debut 'The Man with the Iron Fists' will be hitting theaters November 2, and Universal is gearing up to get you familiar with all the main players. Yesterday they released a teaser for Cung Le's character The Bronze Lion, and today they want you acquainted with Lucy Liu's Madame Blossom, while RZA has stepped up to talk about the movie.
