Activision Ships $1 Billion Worth of Call of Duty: Ghosts

After the insane success of the previous Call of Duty titles and Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto 5, the mark of strong sales is measured in billions. Though Call of Duty: Ghosts hasn’t quite hit the billion-dollar mark just yet, Activision has found a way to make it sound like the first days of availability have been more impressive than they really were.

Call of Duty: Ghosts has only be available for a little over a day, but Activision wants you to know there has been $1 billion worth of copies sold… to retail. While there are hundreds of hundreds of thousands of copies of Ghosts at stores, the sales-to-date of the anticipated sequel haven’t yet matched up with the last two entries in the blockbuster franchise. However, as not to be left out of the billionaire boys club, Activision felt the need to disclose how many copies had been sold to its retail partners to make it seem like everything hunky-dory in Call of Duty land. Perhaps that has something to do with a quarterly earnings call happening later today.

Still, Call of Duty is going to sell well, but we likely won’t know just how well until the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions arrive. Many players will likely double-dip, while more than a few are probably waiting so they won’t have to buy the same game twice. Activision and Gamestop claim Call of Duty: Ghosts is the most pre-ordered next generation title, so while it may not have hit the magic seven-figure number just yet, there’s still a chance it could before the end of November. That’s not quite on pace with previous iterations, but no other Call of Duty in the modern era had to deal with a new console launch so close to release.
