Summer Camps at the Abilene Zoo Will Keep the Kids Happy and Busy

Kids driving you nuts yet? What if there was something fun and educational for them to do during the day? Well, there is and it’s at the Abilene Zoo. They have their annual summer camp classes coming up with lots of fun in store.

The classes are for Pre-schoolers up to 7th grade and start as early as June 8th. Classes cover learning about animals (for the little ones), learning how the zoo works, learning about animals that hunt, how animals disguise themselves, native Texas animals, and more. The classes are week long, usually from 9 am – 3 pm and there are a variety of subjects to choose from in each age group. It sounds like lots of fun but is educational at the same time (but you don’t have to tell them they will be “learning”).

Pre-School Classes:

  • Ages 3-5 (must be potty trained)
  • 9 am -11:45 am or 12:15 pm – 3 pm
  • $75 for members/$85 for non-members
  • classes are as follows -
  1. Alpha Zoo: June 8-12 or July 20-24
    Learn about animals from alligator to zebra
  2. Crawly Critters: June 22-26 or August 3-7
    Learn about the cool animals that crawl on the ground
  3. Monkey See: June 29-July 3 or August 10-14
    Learn about how animals use their senses
  4. Backyard Friends: July 6-10
    Learn about animals you find in Texas

Kindergarten – Entering 1st Grade:

  • 9am – 3 pm
  • $135 for members/ $155 for non-members
  • classes are as follows-
  1. Curious Cats:  June 8-12
    Learn about members of the cat family
  2. Where the Wild Things Live: June 15-19
    Learn about habitats animals call home

 Entering 2nd or 3rd Grade:

  • 9 am – 3 pm
  • $135 members/$155 non-members
  • classes are as follows-
  1. Mascot Madness: July 27-31
    Learn why some animals make great mascots
  2. Venom: August 3-7*
    Learn about the venomous animals found throughout the world

Entering 4th or 5th Grade:

  • 9 am – 3 pm
  • $135 members/$155 non-members
  • classes are as follows:
  1. Secret Agent Z-O-O: June 22-26 or July 20-24
    Do you have the skills to be an animal agent? Find out in this camp!
  2. Zoo School: July 13-17*
    Learn all about the zoo and how we care for the animals
  3. Venom: August 3-7*
    Learn about the venomous animals found throughout the world

Entering 6th or 7th Grade:

  • 9 am – 3 pm
  • $135 members/$155 non-members
  • classes are as follows:
  1. Junior Zoo Keeper: June 29-July 3
    Learn how to take care of the animals and shadow different departments.
  2. Zoo School: July 13-17*
    Learn all about the zoo and how we care for the animals
