I’m not trying to make you feel old. I’m just guiding you on a trip down memory lane with another batch of songs that turn the big TWO OH in 2018.

1.) Aerosmith “I Don’t Want To Miss a Thing”

Remember when Aerosmith used to be considered a “heavy metal” band? No? Me neither. But I remember hearing from my older cousins that Aerosmith in the Seventies was on the harder side of the rock spectrum. By 1998, Aerosmith was back on top with this catchy number written by Diane Warren who had previously penned hits for such notable head-bangers as Air Supply and Boyzone.

This was the video which featured Steven Tyler singing about undying love interspersed with clips of Ben Affleck erotically touching his daughter with animal crackers.

This was the song that played as Bruce Willis and Affleck flew into space to blow up a giant planet-killing meteor. “But why would you train a bunch of oil drillers to be astronauts”, Ben Affleck reportedly asked director Michael Bay. “Wouldn’t it make more sense to train astronauts to operate a drill?” Bay’s response, also according to legend: “Shut up. And never talk about this again”.

2.) Barenaked Ladies “One Week”

Mostly a list of pop culture references from 1998, this song turns 20 on September 22 of this year. Since it has so many pop culture references, this song is kind of like a time capsule from 20 years ago. What was hot in 1998? Oh, things like “LeeAnn Rimes…Harrison Ford in Frantic…The X-Files….and the fact that Sting enjoys tantric sex”.

Also, this song has one of the best lyrics of all time: “Chickity China the Chinese Chicken. You have a drumstick and your brain stops tickin’”

I’m just not sure whether to give the credit to BNL, Busta Rhymes or The Jerky Boys.

3.) Sarah McLachlan “Angel”

THIS song. There’s no way you can hear the opening chord of this song without getting the mental image of a really sad dog inside a cramped cage. This song (not originally about animals) is now more closely associated with animal abuse than Michael Vick. It’s a beautiful song but all I need to hear is that opening chord and I get emotional and want to drive around town letting every dog chained to a stake loose. Thanks a lot, Sarah McLachlan.
