Marvel has adopted a practice first used by the producers of the James Bond franchise, who’ve ended every 007 adventure for decades with the phrase “James Bond Will Return” in the credits. (For many years, they even specified which novel the series would adapt next; when they ran out of Ian Fleming books and stories, they shortened it.) Just last night I saw Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2, and sure enough it concludes with the words “The Guardians of the Galaxy Will Return. (I think we can all agree this is not a spoiler.)

The suit makes the man, and that’s seldom more true than for the superhero set. Batman would be another joe-schmo billionaire industrialist without the arsenal of weaponry built into his armor, Iron Man would literally die without his hardware, and now we can add Peter Parker to the list of superheroes whose own clothes act as unofficial sidekick. In the latest trailer for upcoming threeboot Spider-Man: Homecoming, we get a glimpse of some nifty new modifications (courtesy of Stark Industries) to Spidey’s trademark red-and-blue spandex. A new generation’s Spider-Man needs some modern upgrades, and the latest iteration of the suit includes a detachable mini-drone and what I can only describe as “skintight suction technology.”

File this one under ‘Least Surprising News Stories of the Day’: right on the heels of releasing the first trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming, Sony has announced the release date for Spider-Man: Homecoming 2, proving that no title is so awkward as to prevent Hollywood from slapping the number ‘2’ on it and calling it a day.

You feel that? That tingling Spidey sense? That can only mean one thing: The very first Spider-Man: Homecoming trailer has finally arrived. Two trailers, actually — the official domestic trailer and an international trailer with even more footage, featuring our first look at Michael Keaton’s Vulture, helpful life advice from Tony Stark, some fake Avengers, and all the awkward pain of high school.

While Tom Holland’s introduction as Spider-Man in Captain America: Civil War has to be considered a rousing success, perhaps our favorite part of the character was what we didn’t see: namely, yet-another origin story that puts him through the familiar paces of spiders, wrestling, and that old yarn about great power and great responsibility. Any self-professed Spider-Man fan knows Peter Parker’s history like the back of his hand; the fact that Captain America: Civil War was content to pick up the character’s life midstream bodes well for Marvel’s approach to the character in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

Stan Lee Responds to That ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Mary Jane Rumor
Late last week a pretty substantial rumor surfaced suggesting that Zenadaya’s secret role in Spider-Man: Homecoming is actually Mary Jane Watson. While neither Marvel nor Sony have confirmed or even responded to those rumors, it elicited an unfortunately predictable reaction from several fans who were unhappy that a woman of color would be playing a character traditionally depicted as a white redhead. James Gunn already weighed in with his thoughts, and our own Matt Singer wrote an excellent piece on the matter, and now Stan Lee himself has offered his reaction to the recent casting rumor.

Tom Holland has officially taken up the Spider-Man mantle for Marvel and Sony, but he’ll never replace Tobey Maguire in the deepest, web-covered corners of our hearts. Following his debut in Captain America: Civil War, the consensus among fans and critics alike is that Holland makes for a fantastic Spidey. You might even say he’s an…amazing…Spider-Man. And it looks like he has one very awesome fan in particular who knows a thing or two about web-slinging.

What Marvel Got Right About Spider-Man That His Solo Movies Got Wrong
Oh what a different 18 months makes. A year ago, last fall Spider-Man fans were facing an entire universe of Spidey movies they didn’t particularly want; a third Amazing Spider-Man about the continuing and not-particularly-exciting adventures of Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker, plus spinoff movies for Venom and the Sinister Six. Things got so bad for Spider-Man that when rumors began circulating that Sony was considering an Aunt May movie, Sony had to publicly dismiss those rumors as “silly” with “no validity whatsoever” because people thought that the company that made Amazing Spider-Man 2 might actually be dumb enough to make an Aunt May movie.
