No, you didn't see that wrong, and no there is no missing period in the number. It's a $199 bottle of beer. Oh, and yes, it will be illegal in 12 states.

Sam Adams has announced their making a special beer called Utopias. The beer is going to be 56 proof, which puts the alcohol content around that of some hard alcohols. The beer is pricey at $199 a bottle, and it's going to be fairly limited.

First, it's not even going to be available in 12 states.

  • Alabama
  • Arkansas
  • Georgia
  • Idaho
  • Mississippi
  • Montana
  • New Hampshire
  • North Carolina
  • South Carolina
  • Tennessee
  • Vermont
  • Washington

So it's banned in pretty much the southern states, but will be legal in Texas and New Mexico. No, what if you want a bottle? Well, there's a reason it's going to be so pricey. They're only making 13,000 total bottles of Utopia.

“My original idea for Utopias was to push the boundaries of craft beer by brewing an extreme beer that was unlike anything any brewer had conceived,” Jim Koch, founder of Boston Beer Co., the parent firm of Samuel Adams, told Fortune.com. “I’m proud to present to drinkers this lunatic fringe of extreme beer worthy of the Utopias name.”

Why will there only be 13,000 bottles available? The Utopias are a blend of multiple batches. Some of those batches have been aged for 24 years. So this is not an overnight thing they've come up with.

The finished product will be non-carbonated because the high alcohol content kills the CO2. It will also taste like "a rich vintage Port, or old cognac" according to a statement from the brewery. If you do get your hands on a bottle of it, they recommend drinking it in 1 oz. servings, instead of like regular beer.
