Believe it or not, the biggest, (privately owned), chunks of land in Texas are owned by only a handful of people ... and you have probably never heard of them.

Texas is big, 2nd largest state in the USA in case you didn't know. We have one ranch, 1, that's bigger than the entire state of Rhode Island.

The government owns some pretty big pieces and entities like Texas Pacific Land Corporation have swallowed up a lot of it. When it comes to the private sector though, these folks "boast the most".

We'll start with the landmass Brad Kelley owns. Not an actor, musician or artist, he's a land trader and conservationist who owns 940,000 acres of Texas. Most of it is Brewster Ranch which, according to this, can be yours for only $245 mil.

We have to hop over a company, the aforementioned Pacific Land & Trust, to get to the next "Texan". Texans, (plural), I should say - the heirs to the King Ranch.

When Captain Richard King died in 1885, he had assembled 1 million acres “under wire” with 80,000 cattle, 20,000 horses and mules, and 25,000 sheep. According to the Dallas Daily Herald, it was “probably the largest stock raising establishment under the control of one man in the United States.” Today, King Ranch Inc. is owned by hundreds of his descendants who still gather at the ranch’s Main House, a National Historic Landmark. - landreport.com

We have to hop over another, non-private group ... Caddo Sustainable Timberlands ... to get to the #3, privately, owned hunk 'o Texas. #5 in the overall top 10 list of huge Texas landowners, we have the Brioscoes family. Dolph Briscoe Sr got the ball rolling and then Dolph Jr, who was Governor of Texas from '72 - '78, took over.

Dolph "Chip" Briscoe III now looks over 738,000 acres of the lone star state stretching from the Catarina Ranch in South Texas to the Trans-Pecos and Rolling Plains areas.

Damn glad I don't have to mow any of these ... I can't keep my own yard looking nice and it's mostly rock.

See Inside Yellowstone's Taylor Sheridan’s Beautiful $350 Million Texas Ranch

Sheridan is a wildly successful American filmmaker and actor. He portrayed David Hale in the FX television series "Sons of Anarchy," but of course is best known as the architect of television's fastest expanding universe.

Which is one major reason for his group purchasing the massive ranch.
