Bee Cave Bob Predicts More Texas Winter… Kind Of?
Forget Punxsutawney Phil—here in Texas, we don’t rely on some fancy Yankee groundhog to tell us what the weather’s gonna do. We’ve got Bee Cave Bob, the weather-predicting armadillo, and he made his big forecast on February 2nd at the annual Armadillo Day celebration in Bee Cave, Texas.
Forget the Groundhog—Texas Has Its Own Weather-Predicting Armadillo
So, what’s the verdict? According to Bob, we’re in for six more weeks of winter—well, actually, three weeks, according to the Benevolent Knights of the Raccoon, the event’s organizers. So basically, Texas winter is still a total mystery...like it's been for HUNDREDS of years!
In true Lone Star fashion, Bee Cave Bob doesn’t just predict the weather—he also weighs in on Texas politics. As part of the tradition, Bob chooses a path: right for a politically conservative year, left for a more liberal one. This year, he went right, meaning Texas is expected to stick to its conservative ways in 2025. That's no surprise.
But How Accurate Is He?
Well, Bee Cave Bob has been making predictions since 2010, and his track record is about as reliable as Texas weather itself. Some years he nails it, and other years, Mother Nature just does whatever she wants. But one thing’s for sure—Armadillo Day has become a Texas-sized tradition that’s way cooler than waiting on a groundhog in the freezing Pennsylvania snow!
Meanwhile, here in Lubbock, we've got Prairie Dog Pete...
Lubbock's Own Prairie Dog Pete Makes His Groundhog Day Call--But Can We Trust Him?
As you may know, Lubbock’s got its OWN weather-predicting varmint, and his name is Prairie Dog Pete! Every year, Pete pops out of his burrow at Prairie Dog Town in Mackenzie Park to make his big Groundhog Day prediction.
So what happened this year? Pete saw his shadow, which, according to tradition, means six more weeks of winter. But here’s the kicker—Lubbock hit a high of 79 degrees that very same day! Classic Texas weather. One minute, you’re in a hoodie. The next, you’re cranking the AC!
Will winter last? Will we be firing up the grill next week? Will we get a blizzard in March? Who knows! But one thing is certain—Bee Cave Bob is the only weather expert we truly trust in Texas.
