WATCH: Houston Helicopter Collides With Radio Tower in Devastating Accident
At 7:54 pm on October 20th, 2024, a private helicopter carrying 4 people, including one child, struck a radio tower in the Second Ward in Houston. Tragically, everyone on board was killed.
Initially, it was unclear to responders what the helicopter crashed with. Early reports believed it may have been a crane, but it was later confirmed the helicopter collided with a radio tower. Debris scatted across several blocks near the crash site and the wreckage erupted into flames.
Miraculously, no one on the ground was injured. CCTV captured the moment the helicopter made an impact with the radio tower. You can find the footage below, but please be warned, it may not be suitable for all viewers.
The FAA reports that many helicopter crashes occur as a result of a lack of fuel or pilot error. In 2019, there were 55 fatalities from 24 helicopter accidents. Helicopter crashes are said to happen on average 1.02 per 100,000 flight hours, which is reportedly much higher than the average for other aviation accidents.
SkyEye pilot, Don Armstrong, told ABC13 Houston that he found the radio tower worrisome because the flashing red light was often out. The red light was reported as being out to the FAA just recently on October 1st, but it has not yet been confirmed to have been out last at the time of the crash.
Our deepest condolences to those who lost a loved one in the crash.
