The Question

I absolutely love this question. We asked people "What song or album got you into rock or metal?". I'll go ahead and be the old guy yelling at you to get off his lawn by saying, that passage into the rock and metal genres used to be a bit more dramatic. One day the kid next door was wearing a shirt with a cartoon character on it, then the next he was wearing black shirts with the names of cool bands on them. From there, many started buying posters, going to concerts, and scurrying around pre-internet to find any piece of news they could about their favorite, and/or up-and-coming bands.

Points Of Entry

Before I was even drawn in, there were hordes of people who started rocking when they heard heard or saw Elvis. After the King, The Beatles brought a ton of people over. Then there are the generations of KISS fans.  Now there's tons of Metallica fans. Interestingly enough, we had some bands who's names were repeated over and over, but the answers were truly all over the place, including, yes, some newer names that are keeping rock alive.

My Introduction

My entry point was as clear as day. I was an avid Top 40 listener/purchaser back when there were 40 actual singles on a rock for you to pick up. One day I bought three greatest hits albums, not because I knew the songs, but because of the perceived value of the purchase. One of those three albums was "Alice Cooper's Greatest Hits" and once I hear the song "I'm 18" I was hooked. All of a sudden music wasn't about sing-songy stuff for me, but songs relating to my experiences, even though I was far younger than 18.
