While many Texas towns struggle to keep a community pool open, there is one pool that is truly “As big as Texas!”

I live in a town of over 272,000 people, and you’d think a community swimming pool or two would be a given. Nope! Young kids have a few splash pads, but older kids and adults are out of luck when it comes to public recreational pools.

Maybe it’s this shortage of pools — combined with my childhood memories of weekly summer swims — that makes me wonder what kids do these days to cool off.

A Lagoon Like No Other in Texas City

Enter Lago Mar in Texas City. On the surface, it’s a housing development, but its showpiece is something spectacular: a 12-acre swimming pool with soft white sand beaches and crystal-clear water.

Homes here range from the high $200,000s to over half a million dollars, but you don’t have to be a resident to enjoy it. Public access is available through Lagoonfest, while private areas are reserved for those living in the community.

They market this as “Texas’ Largest Crystal Lagoon.” And yes — this is technically a saltwater lagoon, not your standard chlorinated pool.

What Makes This Pool Special

Beyond its sheer size, Lago Mar’s pool offers a range of experiences. Depths vary from three to ten feet, making it great for both casual wading and more challenging swims. Whether you’re looking to float lazily in the shallows or test your stamina in deeper water, it’s a swimmer’s dream.

This massive aquatic escape proves that in Texas, even the pools can live up to the “go big or go home” motto.
