After being closed for years, a beloved section of the Lake Mineral Wells State Park Trailway is finally back open, and just in time for National Trails Day. The key bridge connecting FM 1195 to the National Vietnam War Museum has been fully restored, making the entire 20-mile Trailway usable once again for hikers, bikers, and horseback riders.

LOOK: The Trail Bridge Is Open

A Unique Fix for a Historic Trail

The broken bridge wasn’t your average repair job. Engineers used a repurposed railroad car to rebuild the crossing, honoring the trail’s roots as a historic rail line between Weatherford and Mineral Wells. Not only does the new design improve water flow and sustainability, but it also preserves the story of the land.

Built by Community, Backed by Texas

This restoration project is a shining example of what happens when local heart meets state support. It was made possible through the efforts of the Friends of Lake Mineral Wells, former State Representative Glenn Rogers, local attorney Rhett Warren, and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The Sporting Goods Sales Tax, redirected in 2019, helped fund this much-needed repair.

Rose Jordan, Director of Tourism for Mineral Wells, summed it up best:

“We’re grateful for the heart and help of folks like Rhett Warren and Glenn Rogers. The timing couldn’t be better, just in time for National Trails Day.”

The Trail Looks Better Than Ever

Beyond the bridge, the entire trail got a facelift, hazardous trees removed, brush cleared, culverts fixed, new surfacing laid, and even restrooms refreshed. A brand-new facility was also added at Cold Springs earlier this year.

“The trail is in its best shape in years,” said Rhett Warren. “Hike it, bike it, run it, or ride it on horseback, this trail is ready.”

Why This Trail Matters to Texas

More than just a pathway, this trail is a scenic treasure running through the Western Cross Timbers region. With gentle grades and open views, it’s a peaceful escape into nature and a reflection of Texas’ rich railway and outdoor legacy.

Former Rep. Glenn Rogers recalled visiting the damaged bridge in 2022:

“I advocated for the funding, and I’m proud to see it restored. This trail is a treasure, and full access means more Texans can experience its beauty."

Takeaway: The Lake Mineral Wells Trailway is officially whole again. If you’ve been waiting for a reason to hit the trail, now’s your time. Let Mother Nature and the good Lord show you the beauty they’ve built together in this corner of Texas.
