Texans and Firearms: What’s Trending in 2025

Texans take their gun rights seriously. With firearm laws still favoring the people and recent relaxations by Governor Abbott, more Texans are carrying than ever before. In fact, handgun sales among women skyrocketed in 2022, proving that self-defense isn’t just a man's game anymore.

My sincere advice to anyone thinking about taking up shooting hunting or self-protection, I encourage you to go shopping for the firearm you're looking for now as prices have dropped to the lowest we've seen since the spike just prior to Covid-19 in late 2019. The time between 2020 and 2022 firearms, ammunition, and accessories shot up in price. However since the election those prices have started dropping drastically.

The Latest in Firearms

This past January, at the National Shot Show in Las Vegas, gun manufacturers are rolled out new models in different calibers, sizes, and even colors, because apparently, a pink Glock is the in-thing now. But finding the perfect firearm isn’t just about aesthetics; it’s about fit, comfort, and firepower. Just let me know when a good time to call is I want to put you on the radio

So, What Are Texans Are Packin'

I reached out to West Texas' top gun retailers to find out what’s popular. Turns out, age and gender play a huge role in firearm choice:

  • Older men - lean toward big calibers like the .45 ACP.
  • Younger men - favor 9mm or .40 S&W for a balance of power and control.
  • Older women - often opt for .380 or .25 calibers due to less recoil.
  • Younger women prefer 9mm for stopping power without excessive kick.

Handgun Sizes Explained

Manufacturers classify pistols based on barrel length:

  • Micro-Pistols - Under 3 inches (tiny but mighty)
  • Sub-Compact - 3 to 3.5 inches (great for concealed carry)
  • Compact - 3.5 to 4.5 inches (versatile and balanced)
  • Full-Size - 4.5 inches and up (because bigger is better… sometimes)

Firearm Sales in Texas

Though gun sales dipped nationwide after 2020 and 2021’s record highs, Texas remains a top-three state for firearm purchases. More women are buying firearms and signing up for concealed carry classes, proving that self-defense isn’t just a trend, it’s a movement.
