The One Gift Every Texan Mom Really Wants (And It’s Not in a Store)
Yes, it's so true the one gift that every Texas Mom really wants and dreams of, is not in any store.
Every year, I talk to listeners who stress over finding the perfect Mother’s Day gift. And don’t get me wrong, there are great Texas-themed gift ideas out there (in fact, I’ve just shared 25 of them). But if I’ve learned anything in over 40 years of marriage, it’s this: what she really wants isn’t wrapped in a box.
Let me tell you a story, a true one straight from my heart.
Seven years ago, my wife Donna—who many lovingly call Mrs. Fearless—had the hardest year of her life. She lost her father, then her mother, her grandfather, and her uncle... one after another. It broke her. That following year, when I asked what she wanted for Mother’s Day, she looked at me through tears and said, “With the kind of year I’ve had, I just want to stay home. I’m afraid if I do anything, I’ll lose someone else.”
That hit me like a ton of bricks. But it also gave me clarity.

When Love Needs a Reminder
I noticed that her wedding ring was missing a diamond. She kept twisting it on her finger, and I could see the pain in her eyes. I gently asked her when that happened. She said,
“The day I went to see my dad for the last time.”
That’s when I knew what to do. I didn’t need to go big, I needed to go deep. I called my jeweler friend, found a ring so beautiful it nearly blinded me, and bought it without a second thought.
That Mother’s Day, I cooked dinner and invited our daughters to join us. When the time was right, I got down on one knee, opened that ring box, and asked her to marry me all over again.

She broke down. I told her,
“It’s time to celebrate us. It’s time to stop waiting for more loss and start praying for more life. The missing diamond was a reminder of what we lost, but this new ring is a reminder of what we still have.”
What Moms Really Want
Moms want to feel seen. They want to be reminded that their strength, their love, and their sacrifices matter. Sometimes that means jewelry, sometimes it’s dinner, and sometimes... It’s just being present. Truly present.
So yes, give her a Texas wine basket or a spa day or bluebonnet jewelry. But don’t forget the one gift every Texan mom wants most: love, connection, and a reminder that she still shines.
Happy Mother’s Day to my wife, to your mom, and to all the incredible women who keep Texas strong, sweet, and steady.
Let’s honor them not just with gifts, but with gratitude.
