Vehicle crashes remain a leading cause of death among children in the U.S., and correct car seat use is one of the most effective protections. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports nearly half (46%) of child car seats are misused, often because of simple installation errors or using the wrong seat for a child’s age, height, or weight.

What Parents Can Expect

One of the biggest benefits of attending this event is learning how to make sure your child’s car seat is truly keeping them safe. Certified child passenger safety technicians will be on hand to walk you through hands-on demonstrations, answer your questions, and give you peace of mind that you’re doing it right. From checking for recalls to matching the right seat to your child’s size, this event is designed to give families the tools they need to travel safely every time.

TxDOT Executive Director Marc Williams said it best: the rise in unrestrained child deaths is “heartbreaking and unacceptable,” and proper car seat use must be a non-negotiable habit, every ride, every time.

When and Where in Abilene

The free Car Seat Check-Up and Resource Fair happens on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2025, from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Goodwill Abilene, 2200 N. 1st St., under the big blue awnings at N. 2nd and Kirkwood. It’s hosted by TxDOT Abilene District, Goodwill West Texas, and the D.R.I.V.E. Safe Coalition.

Bring:

  • Your vehicle and the car seat/booster
  • Your child, if possible (to ensure the best fit)
  • Vehicle and car seat owner’s manuals (if you have them handy)

Plan to spend a few minutes in a personalized session so you’ll leave knowing exactly how to secure your child safely on your own.
