What Is DRI and Who Do They Serve?

Disability Resources Incorporated, commonly known as DRI, has been a vital part of the Big Country for decades. Located in Abilene, DRI is more than a nonprofit. It's a permanent home and workplace for individuals with intellectual disabilities. The organization provides a place where they can live, work, and grow within a faith-based, community-centered environment.

DRI began as an idea in 1983, when two families came up with the idea of a residential community for their children with intellectual disabilities. The families formed a task group to look into and study if other families in our community have the same needs. those early founders came up with a solution and in 1987, DRI was born with a mission to provide care and education for the intellectually challenged in a Christian environment.

Since accepting its first resident in 1989, DRI has expanded from a single lease home to over a half-dozen homes providing a loving environment to more than 40 individuals.

The Cattle Auction That Helps Keep DRI Going

One of DRI’s biggest fundraisers is right around the corner, and it needs your support. The Abilene Livestock Auction is stepping in once again to help raise funds for DRI and the individuals it serves.

The event takes place Tuesday, April 22nd from 12 PM to 1 PM during normal auction hours at the Abilene Livestock Auction, located at 3265 North Judge Ely Boulevard. A special cattle auction will be held to benefit DRI, and every dollar raised will go directly to meeting needs on the DRI campus.

How You Can Get Involved

Whether you’re in the cattle business or just want to support a worthy cause, your involvement matters. To participate in the auction or donate, contact Kassie at 432-349-5051.

As someone who’s helped promote past DRI fundraisers like the celebrity skeet shoot, dove hunt, and golf tournament, I can say these events make a difference. Let’s step up once again and show what the Big Country can do.
