How fun must it be to be in Foo Fighters? In recent years, the band has kept things interesting inviting special guests onstage, welcoming more collaborations from outside influences in the studio and left part of their epic stage shows to rock out some covers for good measure. They even worked up a mash-up with special guest Rick Astley performing "Never Gonna Give You Up" against the backdrop of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit." So what will they do next? They just gave fans a peak with an interesting John Lennon-Van Halen mash-up they've been woodshedding in the studio.

In the tweet below, Dave Grohl writes, "Woodshedding for the summer tour has never felt so good....see you out there....(I’ll learn the words by then, I swear). Thanks to Mighty Mike for the inspirado. (Oh, and Halen and Lennon, too)." The clip finds the band in the studio with Grohl singing the words to Van Halen's "Jump" against the the music of John Lennon's "Imagine" and it works quite well.

As you might expect, Rami Jaffe's keyboard word helps set the base for the song, with Taylor Hawkins also seen on drums and Nate Mendel on bass. Hawkins joins in the backing vocals for the song, playing off a rough voiced Dave Grohl who is just getting up to speed on the performance, but clearly enjoying the idea of what they're doing. Watch the unique mash-up below.

Unlike the Astley mash-up, this appears to not be dependent on a guest vocalist, so it's quite possible a more polished version will be worked into sets this summer. The band is currently on tour in South America, but will return stateside for a spring leg of touring in mid-April. See all of their scheduled dates here.
