Zero Theorem's Five Great Sci-Fi Flicks For Halloween Week

By the end of October, you may have watched all the slasher and monster movies that have been on your Netflix list, but you still want some weird and "out there" things to watch for Halloween week. The guys in Zero Theorem (and their tour manager) have you covered: they've put together a list of creepy, scary, funny space flicks that you might want to check out.

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968): "Right now, 'Hal' is exactly what we are simultaneously working for and against. Namely: artificial intelligence," frontman Caesar says, referring to the HAL 9000 computer in the film, which takes on its own personality and agenda. "We are able to use machines to do anything. If they get to a point of figuring out too much on their own and decide to use their practical logic against us, we're in trouble. To me, Hal is the most dynamic faceless character of all time in any movie. You can empathize with him and agree with his logic and he seems to have a human side as well."

"There are many odd things in the movie that cause you to think; the monolith, dimensional travel, the fetus…Kubrick said 'I don’t want to spell out a verbal road map for 2001 that every viewer will feel obligated to pursue or else fear he’s missed the point,' about the movie. I feel that way with lyrical content. It’s not that many of my favorite songs don’t have simple lines that perfectly and many times bluntly, get the point across, but rather when they are mixed in with more thought-provoking lines it can take me places I might not have otherwise gone. Different people can take away different things from it. This movie does that constantly for me, and takes me to a different place every time I watch it."

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978): "I really enjoy the 1978 remake of Invasion of the Body Snatchers," says drummer Jake Hayden. "The cast is classic; I'm a big fan of Donald Sutherland. When people turn up as emotionless, sociopaths, whereas the day before they were the people we knew, it's fun to draw parallels to real life. It's like, 'My ex-girlfriend's not a narcissist who used to be dreamy, she contacted a weird pod from outer space and has been replaced with a hostile Alien!!'"

Starship Troopers (1997): "Starship Troopers takes place in the future, in a world where a distant planet inhabited by giant insects goes to war against the humans of Earth," explains guitarist Roy Lev-Ari. "The human army send their troops to this distant planet to capture the queen insect in order to stop the war. The reason why this movie is still ingrained in my mind is because of how ridiculous it is. It is one of the few sci-fi movies with an incredible amount of gore that broke through into the mainstream. The character development was outrageously bad which, ironically, made the movie really good. The effects and stage props of this movie were actually well done; it had pretty high-quality CGI for its time. It's a fun and unique movie that is great for a good laugh at its ridiculous plot and scenes."

The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (2005) - "The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy essentially follows the misadventures and accidental triumphs of the frumpy and bumbling Arthur Dent, the last human alive after the Earth is destroyed to make way for an interstellar bypass," bassist Ben White says. "I got turned on to it via the books, dubbed 'a trilogy in five parts,' as a teenager. What attracted me to the series was the tone, which is irreverent, hilarious, and absurd, similar in approach to Monty Python, but unique in execution."

Mars Attacks (1996) - "Mars Attacks is a comedy/science fiction film with a monster cast and directed by one of the great directors, Tim Burton," says tour manager Noel Jasso. "The main plot of the film is a spaceship explodes on Mars and hundreds of aliens leave and invade earth. They set up a meeting between the Martians and people of earth for this big event, which quickly turns into a huge massacre. This film hit theaters the same year Independence Day came out and I thought it was a hilarious take on alien invasion."
