As I sit here with a humdinger of a cold, I got to wondering, "how much snot am I putting out?" It does seem to be on an epic scale, so I started doing some research. Now while it's doubtful you'll hit a cup every hour, it is possible.

The human body already produces 250 milliliters of snot (mucous)  a day.  Thats about a cup and an eighth.  At the height of a cold, you could produce 200 millimeters of snot AN hour.  Checking the conversion chart, you'd need 200 milliliters, plus two 15 milliliters of snot to equal a cup.  I'd say that's close enough for rock and roll.  Or "snot and cold".

So while we're here, there's no "cure" for the common cold. You can help speed them along, according to Prevention by hydrating and resting.

Sipping hot tea will help your throat, aspirin gets rid of some of the aches and pains, get some steam to loosen the stuff up and stay away from new germs.  Wait! There's a big one missing here and it's the real deal.  Chicken Soup has an amino acid that reduces cold symptoms.

A couple other items here I found out, first the color of your mucous does not always mean something (like an infection) sometimes pollens or other environmental factors can give you the nose of many colors.  And here's the best thing of all, the one I wanted to leave you with. When you have a cold, is it better to spit or swallow?  The answer is, it really doesn't matter.  Swallowing would have a tiny, tiny edge because you're returning some of the fluids back to your body, but if you're tummy is wonky, just spit away. Just be careful not to get it on your friends and family.
