Yoko Ono Reunites Sonic Youth’s Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore for Charity Single

Yoko Ono, marriage counselor? The widow of late Beatles icon John Lennon has brought Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon back together less than a year after the Sonic Youth principals shocked the indie nation by announcing their impending divorce.

The occasion? Ono, Gordon and Moore have come together to record ‘Early in the Morning,’ a 14-minute collaborative track that’s being released to benefit the Ashinaga Rainbow House charity as it plans to build a Rainbow House in the Tohoku region of Japan for victims of the March 2011 tsunami that devastated the area.

‘Early in the Morning’ is out now as a digital download via Chimera Music and will be released as a 10″ single on June 19 via SonicYoth.com and other vendors in a limited edition of 1,000 copies. The vinyl record features a cool etching designed by Ono of the flip side.

The future of Sonic Youth has been in doubt ever since Gordon and Moore announced their split, and when SY guitarist Lee Ranaldo chatted with Diffuser.fm earlier this year he wouldn’t alleviate fears that the band may be done. “I have no idea what the future holds,” he said. “We will continue to do stuff, I mean we’ve got archival projects in the works right now. [But] as far as new recordings or new performances, it’s anybody’s guess.”
