Yes or BS — Scotch and Alcohol Edition

It's National Scotch Day, but this Yes or BS spans alcohol in general. If I were to make this only about Scotch, it wouldn't be fair to Buzz. I'm born on St. Patrick's Day and he bought me some whiskey he thought was good as a gift. Now I'm not one to complain about that, but he bought me Scotch, on my Irish holiday birthday. If you aren't sure why this is funny, just wait until number 1.

1. It's against the law to call whiskey "scotch" if it wasn't made in Scotland.
   1. Yes - You can actually read the regulations here. The main point is it has to be "Wholly matured in an excise warehouse in Scotland."
2. Drunk driving was perfectly legal in all 50 states until 1948.
   1. BS - It's been illegal since before most people had cars. The first affordable car was the Model T in 1908. But New Jersey passed the first drunk driving law two years before that in 1906.
3. Johnny Appleseed was a real person, who planted apple trees across the Midwest in the 1700s. And almost all of the apples were used to make hard cider.
   1. Yes - The apples weren't good for eating, but they were great for making cider. And that's why people loved him, because he gave them a way to make booze.
4. Whiskey is only brown because they age it in barrels. Otherwise it would be clear.
   1. Yes - According to the assistant master distiller at Jack Dainel's, it gets 60% of it's flavor from the wooden barrels, and 100% of it's color.
5. Anheuser-Busch put out a beer for kids in the late 1800s.
   1. Yes - It was 1.9% alocohol. They sold it as a nutritional drink for kids, and also a tonic for pregnant women.
