According to a survey involving about 450,000 adults, 17 percent of Americans are binge drinkers.

The Center for Disease Control and Prevention describes binge drinking as consuming four or more alcoholic drinks for a woman, and five or more for a man. There has been a two percent uptick in the percentage of Americans who report binge drinking over the past year, although the CDC attributes this simply to polling more cellphone users — who tend to be younger and more likely to binge drink — in their more recent report.

In addition to young adults being bigger binge drinkers than older folks, the CDC found that men are twice as likely as woman to report binge drinking.
