The PlayStation Network goes down more often than an Arizona State sorority girl, but sometimes — like today —  it’s because Sony plans it that way. Starting at 9 a.m. EST this morning, Sony’s giving a break to the hamsters that keep the PlayStation 3 servers chugging along. After Sony patches up the network it will go back up at 10 p.m. or so tonight.

The good news is that this outage is a controlled-burn thing meant to improve performance and security, unlike last year’s horrendous atrocity brought on by hackers. The bad news is that you won’t be able to play online, download updates or snoop on your friends.

In other words, Sony is basically turning your PS3s and Vitas into Nintendo Wiis today. Maybe we can use the free time to do some yardwork or tend to the wife and kids.

Who are we kidding? We’ll just get our Xbox 360 action on.
