Uplay Not Required for South Park: The Stick of Truth

According to Obsidian, Ubisoft's controversial Uplay service isn't going to be attached to South Park: The Stick of Truth.

An Obsidian representative has answered the question of a fan on Twitter pertaining to Ubisoft's Uplay service. The fan asked if he was required to have Uplay in order to purchase and play South Park: The Stick of Truth on Steam for PC. After a few other Uplay-related questions were asked, the rep confirmed that South Park: The Stick of Truth will not be utilizing Uplay at all.

For many of Ubisoft's titles, such as the Assassin's Creed series, Uplay acts as a form of digital rights management (DRM), and also provides supplementary content to its games, mainly in the form of downloadable content. Uplay caught a lot of heat a few years ago when it acted as a required form of DRM that required players to be continuously connected to the Uplay servers to play their titles.

Uplay's DRM functionality was overhauled after a debacle when the Uplay servers went down. Due to being unable to connect to Uplay's servers, all players were then completely blocked off from their games that had Uplay acting as DRM until the servers were restored. Since then, Ubisoft has removed Uplay's required connectivity. Now it is used to provide its own type of achievement system and multiplayer content for the more recent entries in Ubisoft's library.

Cartman the Grand Wizard, Butters the Paladin, Princess Kenny and the rest of the boys will rage war once South Park: The Stick of Truth is released on March 4 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. Oh, hamburgers!
