There are some great places to visit, see and do while you are in Abilene. Here are a few of those places and all are great for the whole family.

Paramount Theater

The Paramount Theater in downtown Abilene was built in 1930 and was in operation until about 1975 when it closed briefly, due to lack of interest. It was reopened again in 1979 but ultimately would face permanent closer and looming demolition, until an anonymous angel stepped in to finance a total restoration. It again opened in 1987 and has continued to be one of Abilene's finest historical buildings. Today it hosts a variety of events such as  movies, lectures, weddings, musicals, ballets and much more. Abilene Zoo

The Abilene Zoo is an amazing and ever growing facility that currently houses over 1000 animals. Our Zoo is highly thought of and is accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums. They are constantly making improvements to the facility to heighten the experience for zoo goers and to help make the animals more comfortable as well. Currently the Giraffe exhibit is being updated and is expected to re-open later this year. It's a great learning experience for young and old alike with a variety of animals from all over the world. There are snack stands, interactive displays, children's classes, picnic areas, gift shop, train rides and more. Frontier Texas

Frontier Texas  is a history museum and visitors center that covers Abilene and the Texas Forts Trail Region. Exhibits and movies change every once in a while but all cover the history and development of this region. You will learn about the Indians of the area, historical figures from the area, cattle drives, cowboys, military, settlements, trades, guns and much more. There are some hands on and interactive displays as well as movies that will explain about our history. Group and school tours are also offered along with individual tours. They are open 7 days a week all year long with the exception of New Years Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. The museum is located at 625 N. 1st  (325) 437-2800.

Fort Phantom Hill

Fort Phantom Hill is just North of Abilene and has a great history. Established in 1850, it was a laid out to protect the westward movement, occupied by the US Army. Today it is one of the greatest history sites in Texas. It is part of the 650 mile  Texas Forts Trail. While part of the buildings were damaged by fire other buildings still stand as they were over 150 years ago. There are self guided tours of the 38 acre facility available daily. There is also a visitors center with information, brochures, and restrooms available. The site serves as a beautiful, authentic backdrop for photos and portraits. Ft. Town and Country Drive-In

The Town and Country Drive-In is one of only a few operating drive-in movie theaters in Texas. The drive-in shows current movies but allows you to sit in your car or lawn chairs and even visit while you watch the movie. There is a phenomenal snack bar/restaurant that you won't find at any indoor cinema. Plus, you can stay for double features all for one low price! Adults are only $8; kids (3-12) are $4 and kids under 3 are free. This is a fun experience for kids and adults alike. The theater is located at  2902 Vogel Ave.

Primetime Entertainment

Primetime Entertainment center is the ultimate kids playground, but don't think adults can't play too. They have go-karts, batting cages, bowling, mini golf, laser tag, XD theather, arcade, billiards, a little kids area, food and drink, and even a new indoor sports center. This is the most fun place ever. Great for date nights, family nights, friend nights or birthday parties and banquets. Morgan Jones Planetarium

This is a place that most school kids have visited but many adults may not have, at least for a very long time. The planetarium offers seminars and classes about our universe. They have an amazing star gazing room were you are shown and learn about our planets and constellations. You can also learn about our space programs like Gemini or the Space Station. You can see and even feel moon rocks, see what the astronauts eat and wear into space and more. If you've never been or it's been years then you must go back. We have one of the only planetariums of this caliber you'll find anywhere. Adults are $3 and students/children are $2. You'll find the Planetarium at 700 N. Mockingbird or call (325) 677-1444.

Buffalo Gap Historic Village

Buffalo Gap was the first county seat of Taylor County.The Buffalo Gap Historic Village was established to keep the history alive and to tell the story of settlement in the area. You can take tours, visit the Texas History Store, and more. There are yearly, ongoing events that bring people to Buffalo Gap and the Historic Village everyday. Sweetwater Rattlesnake Round-Up

This yearly event in Sweetwater, Texas brings in thousands of visitors from all over the world. The event is always the 2nd weekend in March and includes snake demonstrations and even hunts. The Rattlesnake Round-upis hosted by the local Jaycees organization and is the largest event of it's kind in the world. There is a parade, crowing of the Queen, carnival, 'gun, knife and coin' show, guided hunts, cook-off, snake handling demonstrations and more. This is a must see event if you are in the area. Fort Griffin Fandangle

The Fort Griffin Fandangle is a local live history event that is performed the last 2 weekends of June each year. This event has been ongoing for over 75 years. The show is performed live with residence as the actors along with live cattle, horses, covered wagons, buggies and more. It is a musical depicting the history of Albany, Texas. It is performed outdoors on an acre of land and isn't just educational but funny as well. You will thoroughly enjoy this outdoor musical.
