Here's list three of eleven to get your Halloween viewing up top par. Today, it's about our fuzzy friends the werewolves.

It's been a minute since there was a good werewolf movie. I think a lot of that is because Hollywood lost the main subtext, that of a man fighting his animal side.

With that said, if you only have time for two werewolf movies, pick the top two here. The others aren't too shabby, but "American Werewolf" and "Dog Soldiers" are a clearly a cut about the rest.

So let's get on with the top 6 must-see movies about werewolves.

    An American Werewolf In London

This one is the absolute tops. The transformation scene remains one of the best ever committed to film. I'm not the biggest fan of the trailer because it undercuts the humor in the film as the werewolves dead friend tries to get him to kill himself before he kills other people.  This movie is gold.

    Dog Soldiers

Forgive the grindhouse feel of the trailer, this movie actually came out in 2002. The concept is fairly simple "soldiers versus werewolves". There's plenty of scares and plenty of finds.

    The Howling

The Howling was kind of a big deal in the 80's. It spawned several books and sequels. The problem is, it's very 80's in the way it's made so it looks a bit dated. It still features one of the most haunting scenes ever (it involves a severed head, but I don't want to spoil it).  If you ask me, this is the kind of movie that needs a remake.

    Wolf

You can't go wrong with Jack Nicholson as a werewolf. Just like Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, when a premium actor steps up in one of these fantasy roles, the result is frequently awesome. This movie moved the genre forward just a nudge, taking it into more serious territory.

    Ginger Snaps

This is actually the first movie in a Canadian trilogy. The movie is unique because the main werewolf (or the main focus) is a teenage girl. The movie also manages to capture the crazy teen years that some teens go through and turn that into a metaphor for teens going wild as werewolves.  This ones a winner, I can't speak for the other two.

    Red Riding Hood

I don't know what to call this kind of movie. In the old days it would be a "B" movie, but these days even the "B" movies seem to have an "A" looking budget. The movie is a mashup of the Little Red Riding Hood story and a werewolf movie and for me it works just fine. The acting is pretty good too.
