School starts for college kids in the next few weeks and for many parents, as well as the students, it's a world unknown. What will they need, for the dorm/apartment, or better yet for class? I have 3 gadgets that could make a college students life much easier. They may seem a bit pricey but remember they are an “investment” in your child's future.

Ultrabook Laptop Computer

An Ultrabook is just like a laptop but it's smaller, lighter and easier to carry around campus. Many companies are making these super thin, light weight computers. Most are under $1000 and while that may sound expensive, it's an investment and no college student these days can operate without a computer. Many classes these days make it mandatory to submit papers and projects to the professor via email. A computer is a must; might as well be easy to carry from place to place as well.

Livescribe Pen

When I was in college we used chisels and stone to take notes on; I so would have loved one of these pens. It translates your handwritten notes to digital text. They come in 2,4 or 8GB memory and range from $120-$150. It records everything you say, hear or write and then you link it to your laptop/computer and download the info. With a simple tap you can replay audio, send it as an email, or post it to social media sites as well. It has multiple apps you can add, like a translation app, Wikipedia, games, dictionary and more. This would probably be my pick for a back to school gadget, of course, you need the computer first to make this of any use.

Kindle

A Kindle is a great tool for college students. Not only is it lightweight it's self, (about 6 oz.) it can replace many of those heavy books you have to carry to and from class. A Kindle isn't just for “fun” books, although you can download those as well, it is also possible to download and borrow textbooks and library books. Many “classics” are even free. You can also surf the web on your Kindle and because of the built in wi-fi you can download books instantly. There are many different models available ranging from $79 for the most simple version to $200 for the Kindle Fire.
