We recently sat down with Thrice vocalist Dustin Kensrue and guitarist Teppei Teranishi to discuss the band's next chapter, which will bring a new album. Titled Palms, the effort is set for release on Sept. 14 via Epitaph and will contain the single "The Grey."

Speaking on the track's sonic similarities to the group's older material, Teranishi comments, "That's not the first time I've heard people say 'The Grey' kinda feels like a throwback, but that [comparison] never occurred to me until I heard somebody say that."

He continued, "I think an interesting and kinda common criticism that we get is that people are bummed that we're not heavy anymore. I feel like, to me, a lot of the stuff we've been making currently feels heavier - based on what I perceive as heavy - than [our earlier material]."

Kensrue also explained why the band will never write a sequel to their iconic track, "The Artist in the Ambulance": "Even if we executed whatever that is, it's not gonna ever feel that way to the person listening. So much of what you love in a record that you heard at a certain time is connected to so many other things happening, especially if it's a record you heard in your teens. You can't recreate that for someone. It just hits them at a certain point at a certain time."
