I guess workers unions got a bad name when some in Detroit got a little top heavy. That's just my guess. I do know for a fact that we have unions to thank for a lot of things, including the five day work week and Labor Day.

You might think that Labor Day is just "a salute to the working man (and woman)", but it was originally spelled out to honor the spirit and solidarity of labor unions. It's also said that it's possible we straight up ripped off the idea from Canada, who also celebrate Labor day, but spell it with a "U" just to be weird (Labour Day).  Trade unions themselves got their start in Great Britain with the most notable item being the notion of eight hours of work, eight hours of recreation and eight hours of sleep.

Unions aren't as big a part of the American landscape anymore. If you cut your finger off at your job, you no longer report it to your union, you just sue the heck out of your employer.  I still don't think they've outlived their usefulness though, there's still a few battles to be fought for the working man and woman. So thank a union member for your Labor Day Holiday (if you can find one).
