Sixty years of being greeted by Big Tex when entering the State Fair of Texas came to an unfortunate end this morning. Big Tex burned to the ground shortly after 10:30 this morning.

He was recently refurbished and early reports seem to believe this may have been an electrical problem, but it's early and nothing is certain as of yet.

Big Tex made his Fair debut in 1952, sporting a 75 gallon hat and size 70 boots and standing 52 feet tall. The following year he learned to speak.

Onlookers say it was a quick death, taking only about 10 minutes for the giant to burn. Fire was seen coming from Tex's neck and shortly after the flames engulfed Tex leaving only a skeletal structure.

Officials say Big Tex will be rebuilt. This was the final weekend of the fair this year so hopefully Big Tex will be back next year bigger and better than ever.
