NCAA College Football – Week 14 Recap

LSU is in the national championship game, and Oklahoma State certainly made a strong case that they should be there as well. Now its up to the poll voters and the BCS computers to decide whether the Cowboys will get a shot at former coach Les Miles, or if the Tigers will indeed have a rematch with Alabama.

Elsewhere, Montee Ball and Robert Griffin III continued their late-season pushes for the Heisman. And the crazy season of upsets continued with Houston’s undefeated season coming to a halt and Clemson putting an emphatic end to Virginia Tech’s long-shot national title hopes. Megadeth guru Dave Mustaine was the lead guest on last night’s episode of ‘That Metal Show’ (Dec. 3). He spoke about having to have neck surgery, which almost cost the band its appearance at the Big Four show in New York in September. Mustaine soldiered on with the heart of a champion and played through the pain. He has had the surgery, is feeling better and even showed the scar last night. How metal!

As college football’s regular season nears its end, the postseason picture is starting to take shape. Barring a major shakeup in the polls, Alabama punched its ticket to the national title game. The only thing that remains to be seen is if they’ll have another shot at top-ranked LSU. Next week’s conference championship games could shake up the BCS, while the Bedlam rivalry between Oklahoma and Oklahoma State will determine the Big 12 title and a spot in the Fiesta Bowl. The day started with Lee Corso letting loose an expletive on ‘College Gameday,’ and things just got crazier from there. The BCS was officially thrown into chaos as three of the nation’s top five teams all went down to defeat. #1 LSU remained in the driver’s seat for the title game with another dominating win, but any number of one-loss schools are now back in the mix for the title game. The biggest beneficiary of this week’s upsets will likely be #6 Arkansas, who could move as high as #3 when the new polls come out and still have to play LSU, meaning the Razorbacks could control their own destiny for a spot in the national championship game (but, oddly, not for the SEC title game).

After all the disgusting headlines out of Penn State dominating the sports world this past week, it was good to return to the field with some actual football. And the Top 25 gave us plenty of excitement to discuss.

Seven ranked teams, including two in the Top Five, went down to defeat. Boise State saw its BCS hopes die on a missed field goal as time expired (again). Oregon downed Stanford in a wild Pac-12 shootout. Oklahoma State looked every bit the part of a title contender. And Penn State hit the field without Joe Paterno at the helm for the first time in 46 years. Here are all the highlights from this week in the AP Top 25.

Week Three is in the books, and it was an exciting one featuring a slugfest between two top five teams, the end of the nation’s longest winning streak and a bunch of outstanding individual performances. Here is this week’s wrap-up from the top 25.

#1 Oklahoma 23, #5 Florida State 13

Oklahoma’s defense dominated the game, holding the Seminoles to just 27 yards rushing, forcing three turnovers and getting six sacks. Oklahoma sophomore receiver Kenny Stills had seven catches for 125 yards, including the eventual game-winner, a 37-yard jump ball reception for a touchdown with 7:00 to go in the fourth quarter.
